Tobacco is one of the biggest threats in the world, it leads to death, illness and impoverishment. Therefore, tobacco control is an essential part of sustainable development because it diverts household expenditure from food, health-care and education. This economic burden caused by increased health care costs and lost productivity is greater in developing countries.
Half of the people consuming cigarettes get killed by this unhealthy habit.
Each year tobacco kills about 6 million people out of those 5 million death are caused by direct tobacco use and 1 million by second hand smokers.
There are about 1 billion smokers out of which 80% live in low- or middle-income countries.
DEPENDENCY

Tobacco addiction has both physical and psychological causes.

Dependency

Nicotine crosses the blood-brain barrier and intervenes in the metabolic processes of the brain as a consequence, within a short period of time smokers develop a dependence. On top of that, smokers can develop a psychological dependence because smoking becomes a daily habit, cigarettes is often used as toolto cope with stress.

Consequences

Tobacco use increases the risk of respiratory (13% lower respiratory infections, 36% COPD), cardiovascular diseases (16.6% ischaemic heart disease, 15.5% stroke, 14% hypertensive heart disease, 12% other cv diseases) and cancer (mostly lung cancer: 60% risk attribution). Accordingly also the the oral health (31% lip and oral cavity cancer) is at risk because of the toxic mixture in tobacco smoke ans postmenopausal smoking women have greater risk to get osteoporosis than non-smokers.  Further men consuming tobacco may suffer from a weakened potency.
